How design can contribute to make people get awareness of food?

Self-sufficiency rate of food is incredibly low in Japan. It is less than 40 %. The number is getting lower and lower year after year. What's happening now in my country, food is easily obtained whenever you want 24 hours. We have got used to it and taken it for granted. It sounds very convenient and attractive, however it causes lots of issues. The culture of food in Japan seem rich. In spite of that, we seem lost imagination that how this fruit transported and respect for the people who harvested this vegetable. People only care about expire date for food.
In order to encourage awareness about how people's purchases influence global environment and society, as well as individually, consumers need to feel a connection with the context and impact of their foods. By making the background visible, design can inspire visions about the big picture influence on a product and our food choices.
